Tankless vs. Tank Water Heaters: An Honest Comparison

Water Heaters June 9, 2026 · By tony.genov

Twice a week, someone asks me at their kitchen table: “Should I go tankless?” And twice a week, my answer starts the same way: it depends on how your house uses hot water — not on what either of us wishes were true.

The sticker prices, honestly

A like-for-like 50-gallon tank swap is the cheapest path. A tankless conversion costs two to three times more upfront, because you’re usually paying for a larger gas line, new venting, and a different mounting location.

Where tankless genuinely wins

  • Big households with shower traffic jams. Endless hot water isn’t a luxury — it’s the fix.
  • Long ownership horizons. Staying 10+ years? The lifespan math tilts hard toward tankless.
  • Flood-sensitive installs. No stored 50 gallons means no 2 a.m. indoor lake.

Where the humble tank wins

  • Tight budgets and short stays. Selling within five years? You will not recoup a conversion.
  • Smaller households. Two people who shower at different times will never stress a properly sized tank.
  • Emergency replacements. A same-day tank swap gets hot water back by dinner.

Either way, get the quote in writing, flat, before anyone touches a pipe. (You knew I’d say that.)
