Why Is My Water Heater Making That Noise?

Water Heaters February 27, 2026 · By tony.genov

Heaters talk. A field guide to the dialect:

  • Rumbling / popping: sediment baking on the burner. A flush may save it; ignored, it shortens tank life.
  • High-pitched whine: usually inlet restriction or a failing element — worth a same-week look.
  • Ticking: often just pipes expanding. Harmless if it fades after use.
  • Banging when valves close: water hammer — fixable with arrestors before it stresses joints.
  • Hissing or dripping sounds: call today. That’s water going somewhere it shouldn’t.
